Lesson plan: Simmetry in Nature

School: Istituto Comprensivo “Mario Bosco”- Lanciano-Italy

Subject: Mathematics

Topic: Simmetry

Class: 8th grade

Teacher: Math Department (Barchi Giuseppe, Borrelli Giovanna, Francione Antonella, Giallonardo Tommaso, Mancinoni Ada, Pellegrini Giuliana)

Duration:

n.1 lessons of 60 minutes

Curriculum:

in accordance with the curriculum approved by  Ministry of Education

It is assumed that the students  already:

  • know the notion of polygons
  • know the intuitive concept of axis
  •  observe, describe, classify elements of the surrounding reality

Lesson aim:

After the lesson the students will be able to:

  • Recognize, determine and describe simmeries also trought observation the surrounding reality
  • Apply a simmetry
  • Use geometric set

The methods:

the practical method, the communicative method, the problem solving method.

Teaching aids: interactive whiteboard, computer, multimedia, tablets, smartphones, geometry set. For laboratory activity: felt-tip pen,  leaves, mirror, fruit, seeds.

Coursebook:

Textbook : Vacca R., Artuso B., Bezzi C. – “Tutti matematici plus”- ATLAS ED.

Lesson procedures:

TimeTeacher’s activityStudents’activityRemarks after lessons
FIRST LESSON: Organizational moment (5 min)Greets the students, checks the attendance.   Ensures silence and discipline in order to carry out the activity well.   Checks that all students have all the necessary materials on the desks.   Prepares the necessary materials.   Organizes for working groups (max 5 students/group) They’re getting ready for class. They have notebooks, textbooks and a geometry kit on the desks.
2. Capturing attention (5 min)The teacher: -stimulates the active participation of the students present trought brainstorming;   -checks and updates the previously taught knowledge;   -appreciates and corrects the students’ answers.Students partecipate and give answers.Analysis of the  answers received.
(50 min)Theacher illustrates experiments in the science lab on symmetry.Students listen to the teacher. Systematic observation.
1th experiment -The experiment will need some dark colored felt-tip pens to show the axis clearly. Then we’ll need some leaves and a ruler.   -We are  going to take leaves and with the felt-tip pen and see if there’s a symmetrical axis or not.The students listen to the teacher.         The students work together. Systematic observation.
2nd experiment -The experiment will need  some mirrors, fruit, seeds and leaves. We also played around with finding letters and words to find symmetrical axis. The students listen to the teacher and then work together.Systematic observation.
Final activity -Making the video. The students work together.Digital skill.
